Early riser

With the Lemsip having done it's job and having sniffed and sneezed through a 14 hour flight to Asia I am now feeling somewhat better. Heaven only knows what the poor chap sitting next to me on the flight caught from me.

Having ran a 12km on Sunday in practically in sub zero temps, I was up at 05:30 this morning in the gym at the hotel bashing out a good 8km. I wanted to do more but the heat was intolerable, even in the indoors gym, so remembering my Chicago experience, I decided to knock off at 8km and 44:05 of running. The only reason I was up so early was that I had awoken around 03:30 due to jet lag and as opposed to doing what most normal people would do, i.e. turn over and go back to sleep, I switched on the tv to see if the Reading-Birmingham FA cup replay was on - and it was! So, that's the reason. Mad. And they lost 2-1.

Hi Ian,
It was really interesting reading your blog. I was wondering if you planned to run in the Singapore marathon in Dec this year or the Mumbai Marathon in Jan 2007? Do let me know, as I plan to run in them. I am still in the 5hr plus category. But hope to do under 4.5hrs in the singapore marathon. Hope to start my own blog on my marathon prep. some day!!
Best wishes for your prep. for the London Marathon.

Girish - I would love to run a marathon in Asia. I assume the start is pretty early so as to miss the heat of the day? This blog does two main things - it acts as an inspiration for me and hopefully others and it also is a nice record to look back on. Good luck - if you train well, you will run your time of 4:30. And even if you don't how many others do tou know who have run a marathon? Not many......

The Singapore marathon is on Dec 3, and the Bombay marathon will be on Jan 14 (or Jan 21). Do try and make it for one of the two, I hope to do both of them. I am currently doing 7km a day 3/4tiems a week and a long run of about 15km, and will take it to 20km this sunday. In about a couple of weeks I hope to run 9km 3/4times a week and a long run of about 20/25 on sundays. This should be good for me. I have done 3 full marathons and all 3 have been above 5hrs, and one half marathon of 1.58hrs. So in theory i can do a 4.10 if I just get the mileage thing going. Earlier I used to run 5kms 4times a week, with a weekend run starting at 13km and going upto a peak of 30kms 3weeks before the marathon.
Enjoy,

Girish, I never knew. 3 full marathons, that is fantastic. It does not matter the time for a marathon. No body who has done it ever asks the time - only those who have no idea ask and quite right. Because it depends on totally how you feel on the day. Please check out one of my very early posts about my Chicago experience to see that time really does not matter.
I also admire you for running in the heat. Do you use a heart rate monitor? It may make the training more meaningful? Keep in touch

Nope, I dont use a heart rate monitor. I started training by reading off the net, never really found their mention. But, how accurate are they? Is yours a watch one or something different? After completing my first marathon, I always knew that I could do it again and again, so now its finish time that keeps me motivated. I hope to do more non-Bombay marathons, its a great reason to travel to different places. My half marathon time 1.58(which is the only time I was able to achieve the time I had aimed), was outside Bombay, so I hope to break the 4.30 barrier in the Singapore marathon.
At what age did you get into distance running? I hope you continue running many more marathons .....

I started running when I hit 40 years old. Before that I played squash and then my back went so I had to do some thing different. Before that I hated running!I tried the heart rate monitor just for fun to see if it makes a difference and it certainly gives a diffrent focus. I have a polar and it is pretty good.

I also like running in other countries etc, but must admit prefer to run where the language is English because if you have a problem then at least you can explain what it is!

I have no doubt you will break 4:30 in Singapore. But will it be hot?
